Birmingham, AL is located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Birmingham was born out of the iron and steel industry. The city is well known for its role in the Civil Rights movement. Modern Birmingham is a much different place brimming with enter-tainment, the arts, outdoor recreation and world class cuisine. It is home to art galleries, golf courses, antique shops, and trendy malls. There are many family green spaces such as Railroad Park. With a mild climate many suburbs surround the city giving the metropolitan area a population of approximately 1.2 million.
